Tempe, AZ, also known as Hayden's Ferry, was first established around 1865. During that time, US military service members and Hispanic workers were hired to grow food and animal feed to supply Fort McDowell which was located about 25 miles northeast of present downtown Tempe. Within a year, they began to set up small campers near the river that became the first permanent communities in the Valley of the Sun after the fall of Hohokam. Today, Tempe is a thriving suburb to the east of Phoenix offering employment, housing, and plenty of activities to keep you busy for days!















If you love outdoor activities, you will love living in Tempe. Tempe Town Lake is a publicly accessible lake that is run by City of Tempe. The lake provides recreational activities to residents and tourists, as well as helps protect the surrounding area from flooding. More than 40 special events happen at Tempe Town Lake annually. Some of the events include Ironman Arizona, the Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade, and the state's largest Independence Day celebration.

















If you prefer to spend the day outdoors away from a big crowd, you might consider a nice long bicycle ride. The City of Tempe has approximately 175 miles of bike ways which include bike lanes, desert trails, and canal paths. You can cruise down Mill Avenue or ride some trails at Papago Park. In 2015, Tempe was designated as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists.

















If Arts and Culture are more your thing, Tempe has an abundance of venues to explore. As you walk around the city, you will be delighted to visual art which include prehistoric drawings left by Tempe's earliest dwellers to contemporary art by major national and international artists. Although too numerous to list,nother venues include the ASU Art Museum known for its innovative and thought provoking programs, the Desert Botanical Gardens where you can experience a true Southwestern holiday tradition of 8,000 hand lit luminarias while sipping warm cider and listening to Mariachi singing.
